English 9
In English 9, students learn about:​

1. Working with stories and text​
- types of text (informative, persuasive, narrative, expository)
- learning about the purposes of these text (to inform, to persuade, to narrate/tell a story, and to teach)
- genres of text (non-ficition, fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, adventure, etc)
- working with text such as orally (speeches, presenting, plays) and visually (posters, photographs)
- literary elements (juxtaposition, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, etc)

2. Picking up strategies and processes
- strategies for reading (word structure, predicting, inferring, summarizing)
- strategies for oral practice (eye contact, hand gestures, body language, express opinions, ask audience questions, taking turns)
- strategies for writing (revising, editing, using better vocabulary, adding in elements to consider the audience, etc)

3. Elements of the English language​
- learning about the features of oral English (pace, volume, gestures)
- change of language (old English = thus, thee, and foresee to modern English = you, me, etc)
- usage of English such as metaphors, avoiding double negatives (neither and cannot together), and vocabulary misuse
- rhetorical devices in English (idioms, humours, situational irony, symbolism)
- connotation and denotation (one word that has multiple different meanings)
